Aside from politics, when I was a backpacker through Europe years ago, I experienced firsthand the lovely reception Americans can face (and unfortunately, based on some rude U.S. travelers, it's not always unjustified). At one point, my travel partner (who now officially holds dual citizenship in the U.S. and Canada) and I paired up with two Canadians, complete with flags on packs, and found our adventures to be much more polite! Funny, eh?
